The Real Truth About Under Sink Water Filters

May 31st, 2009 by Water Filter

By Mark Berginson

The value of under sink water filters varies, as do the prices of the units. A high priced undersink water filter isn’t necessarily a better value. It’s the performance of the product, the contaminant reduction that’s most important. Here’s how to find the right purification device for your home.

Generally speaking, under sink water filters cost more than those that sit on the kitchen counter, or attach to the faucet. The primary reason for the increased price is the need for a separate faucet, which most companies include. Normally, it takes the place of your sprayer, but you can drill a new hole, so that you still have the sprayer and the additional faucet. One of the advantages of an undersink water filter is to free up some counter space.

Of all the products on the market, there are really only two highly effective brands. One costs nearly $800. The other costs around $150, when you buy it direct from the manufacturer. If there is no difference in quality, then why would you pay four times as much?

The company that makes the more expensive brand goes by the name of Ever-pure®. They market their products as being the “best” point of use or home purification devices. They also market to businesses and industries. The Ever-pure® undersink water filter reduces chlorine, odors, THMs, VOCs, cysts, lead and other contaminants. Many of the cheap brands only reduce chlorine. They’re basically charcoal filters.

The $150 under sink water filters provides the same or better contaminant reduction. When it comes to lead, the Ever-pure® product only reduces it to the federal action level, a maximum contaminant level set up by the US EPA for public providers. The $150 product reduces lead by 99% or more. It’s the purification technology that makes the difference here.

The Ever-pure® undersink water filter relies on reverse osmosis for contaminant reduction. They have added to it other steps including granular carbon and special media to trap the chemicals that are not removed through reverse osmosis. They sell cheaper products, but there is always “something” that is not removed by them. The only one of there models that reduces THMs and VOCs is the $800 model.

The less expensive, but still effective brand relies on ion exchange to reduce lead. They use granular carbon and multiple filtering media to reduce chlorine, THMs, VOCs and other chemicals. Then, they use submicron filtration to remove cysts. Submicron filtration is similar to reverse osmosis, but the technology is more advanced and less expensive.

As is the case with computers and other electronic devices, technological advancements have allowed companies to make effective under sink water filters for less. The older technology of reverse osmosis only makes a more expensive undersink water filter, not a better one.

Don’t listen to the advertising and marketing. If you want value, you want a multi-stage selective filtration device, but you don’t need reverse osmosis. That’s how you get the most effective and affordable under sink water filters for your home.

Discover Why The Experts Recommend A Home Water Purifier

It may still seem unbelievable to you, but the fact is; we must all personally control the quality of our water by installing an effective home water purifier. The experts are just about unanimous in demanding that we all take personal action to protect ourselves and our families against the dangerous health risks contained in our water supplies.

You probably know that water is the largest component of your body, nearly 75% to be exact, and absolutely essential for life, but you may not be aware that our modern world with all its technological and industrial advances, has severely contaminated our water supply.

In fact such authorities as NBC, Fox News Network, and the Environmental Working Group among a long list of others, have all published reports and articles stating just how severe the damage is.

For instance the Associated Press in its analysis of federal government data of the past 20 years estimates that major drugmakers and other manufacturers have legally released an average of 13 million pounds of chemicals per year into our water supplies.

Fortunately you can easily take action to protect yourself. A high quality home water purification system that is both effective and affordable can also be beneficial for several other equally important reasons.

1. Safer for the environment than bottled water

Bottled water bottles contain chemicals known as phthalates, which are known to effect testosterone and other hormones. Recent studies of bottled water show that most of this plastic ends up in land fills where it can leach the harmful phthalates into the soil. This can in turn bleed in to our water supplies. Drinking filtered water from a home water purifier can remove this risk.

2. A Home Water Purifier Saves you cash

Bottled water cost more per gallon than gasoline, and we all know how expensive that is. Purifying your tap water at home can cost less then $0.10 per gallon if you choose the right system.

3. Dangerous Chlorine residue and by-products

The chlorine that is used to disinfect the water supplied to your home leaves a residue. This is why you can often smell a bleach like odor coming from your tap water. But the real danger is far more serious than a bad odor.

This residue can produce harmful THMs(Trihalomethanes), chlorination by products, which the US EPA acknowledges are associated with cancer. The Natural Resources Defense Council believes that 30 cases of rectal cancer per day can be associated with THMs in our drinking water.

These are just a few of the reasons experts suggest a home water purifier for every home. And if you select carefully you can achieve safety for an affordable price with out sacrificing effectiveness.
